I’ve added to my rating scale. See below.
Desert Island. This is the highest rating. You want these records on the proverbial desert island.
Core Collection. These are the kinds of records that serious collectors should have in their library.
These records are all-time greats and I think you should be familiar with them.
Any album on the Aretha Scale is an album I find enjoyable, but not necessarily one I would listen to regularly. I like it when I hear it, but I move on fairly quickly.
Perfectly Pleasant. An album that is perfectly pleasant like a lazy Sunday afternoon in the park. Completely inoffensive. A nice way to spend a little while, but perfectly forgettable when it’s over.
Sometimes a record universally beloved or praised simply does not resonate with me and it’s just not my cup of tea.
The lowest rating I can give. Sometimes I find a record unappealing on any level. Fans of that album may say to me, “You just don’t get it, man!”. And I say to them: “You’re right! I don’t get it.” Music like this will actually get me to change the radio station if I’m in the car.
