This is Björk’s first album after leaving The Sugarcubes. I remember her being a critical darling but I can’t recall anybody I knew talking about her very much. She has a beautiful voice. Upon listening, the first descriptors that come to mind: atmospheric and moody. Lots of good stuff on this record and I liked it quite a bit.
My Rating:
Johnny Dee wrote this about Debut: “This is an album that believes music can be magical and special. It will either puzzle you or pull you into its spell. And if you fall into the latter category, 'Debut' will make every other record you own seem flat, lifeless and dull by comparison.”1
NME ended up ranking it the best album of 1993.2
The Independent called Debut “a major achievement”.3
