Project 1001: June 11, 2024; Remedy by Basement Jaxx
And the music keeps on playin' on and on
Remedy is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Basement Jaxx, an outfit about whom I’m 100% unfamiliar. I find this album to be good for a night at a club. For sitting down and listening? Not really.
The title ‘Remedy’ was “chosen as an antidote to the poisons they saw within dance music”, a music they saw as superficial.1 How successful they are at providing an actual remedy is up to the listener I suppose. I’m agnostic on the matter.
This album has been described as “a blissful joyride”,2 “beautifully melodic dance music that's free of pretensions”,3 and a “trippy l'il slice of vinyl a masterwork.”4
Remedy was released in May of 1999 and produced three singles that reached the top of the US Dance music charts.5
My Rating:
Livin’ La Vida Loca topped the singles chart.6
Fanmail by TLC was the number one album.7
The Mummy wrapped up the top spot at the box office.8
ER was America’s favorite TV show.9
We’ll Meet Again by Mary Higgins Clark led the NY Times bestseller list for fiction and The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw was number 1 for nonfiction.10
John Elway had announced his retirement from playing in the NFL one week earlier.11
I like the playlist a lot better than the album, especially Move Closer by Sonique.
Enjoy and listen without prejudice. Cheers!
