Project 1001: June 12, 2024; The World is a Ghetto by War
The Cisco Kid was a friend of mine
What a great band and this is a top-notch album. The Cisco Kid has to be one of the all-time classics. (Shout out to Gooch!) This album was the #1 album of 1979.1
My Rating:
Rolling Stone praised The World is a Ghetto asserting that, “War has reached the point where they're becoming a significant force in the jazz and soul fields.”2
The record is an example of, “the…progressive-soul movement (of the early '70s)”.3
At the time of The World is a Ghetto’s release, November of 1972, the top-selling albums were Superfly by Curtis Mayfield and Catch Bull At Four by Cat Stevens.
The chart-topping singles in November ‘72 were "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues, "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley", I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash, and "I'll Be Around" by The Spinners. Now that’s quite a collection of hits!4
America’s favorite TV shows at the time:
1. All in the Family, 2. ABC Tuesday Movie (Brian's Song), 3. Columbo, 4. Maude, 5. Sanford & Son.5
Americans’ favorite movie at the time was The Poseidon Adventure.6
Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and I’m Ok, You’re Ok by Thomas A. Harris, M.D.7
Number 9 Ohio State beat #3 Michigan and #1 USC beat #14 UCLA to set up their Rose Bowl showdown on New Year’s Day.8
On November 27, 1972 the Miami Dolphins smashed the St. Louis Cardinals for win number eleven on their way to their legendary perfect 17-0 season.9
Enjoy and listen without prejudice. Cheers!
