Project 1001: Out of the Blue by Electric Light Orchestra; June 17, 2024
The sun is shining in the sky / There ain't a cloud in sight / It's stopped raining / Everybody's in the play / And don't you know, it's a beautiful new day
You want harmonies? ELO has harmonies. You want luscious string arrangements in a pop/rock setting? ELO has that too. You want a really good record? ELO has you covered with this one. For me, ELO has always been one of the most distinctive-sounding bands ever and Out of the Blue is a grand example of the ELO sound. And Out Of The Blue is considered by some to be the finest concept album written about the weather ever recorded.1 Here is where I confess that I can think of no other concept albums about the weather.
The contemporaneous review in Rolling Stone slammed Out of the Blue as a “totally uninteresting and horrifyingly sterile package.”2 To which I say, whatever and at least 10 million fans disagreed by purchasing the album.3
A 2007 review of the reissue praised the album as, “proof of how good (music) can sound when the grand approach works.4
In 2021 another reviewer lavished praise writing that “this album is every bit as surprising as it is excellent.”5
Out of the Blue peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart on January 7, 1978.6

Definitely my favorite ELO album and I have almost all of them, at least the older ones when they were in their Heyday. Jeff Lynne is one of my all-time favorite singer/writer/producers. Anyway, I posted this on my facebook group a while back. I love Out of the Blue! Cheers!
